The Quiet Site

The Quiet Site team has implemented a multifaceted approach to driving sustainable transformation in the tourism industry, encompassing operational changes, infrastructure investments, community engagement and advocacy. The Quiet Site's dedication to sustainable transformation has garnered significant recognition, including prestigious awards such as the King's Award for Enterprise and Cumbria Tourism’s Sustainable Award.

Recognising the urgency of the climate crisis and the limitations of government action, the Quiet Site has taken proactive steps to reduce its environmental impact and inspire others to do the same. For example, they have been instrumental in establishing Sustainable Integrated Transport Ullswater (SITU). This group, comprised of local residents, advocates for a sustainable and integrated transport system for the Ullswater Valley, aiming to reduce reliance on cars among visitors and residents alike. SITU’s initiatives include the development of new footpaths and the launch of bus services connecting attractions and accommodation within the valley to help facilitate car-free travel. Car-free holiday experiences are also actively promoted by The Quiet Site, collaborating with other holiday parks to offer PodnPedal breaks where visitors cycle between accommodations and are immersed in the natural surroundings of the Lake District.

Alongside this, infrastructural investments have also been a significant driver of The Quiet Site's sustainable transformation. One of the key focus areas has been energy transition, progressively eliminating reliance on fossil fuels by investing in renewable energy sources. Furthering their commitment to energy efficiency, the Quiet Site have constructed their own well-insulated and shaded accommodation units, with many generating more energy than they consume.

The Quiet Site’s commitment to sustainability also extends beyond energy to encompass water conservation and waste management, reducing water consumption by 6% despite increasing occupancy rates. In embracing a zero-waste philosophy, the site has eliminated single-use plastics and established a dedicated zero-waste shop where guests can refill containers.
