"I recommend encouraging and fostering growth for women in their networks. When a woman breaks a barrier she builds a path for a woman behind her to follow."

First of all, introduce yourself by telling us a bit about what you do, where you work and something that you enjoy doing in your spare time.

Director, Partner Marketing at Brand USA. I enjoy being a local tourist and "urban hike" around my city, Washington D.C.!

Can you tell us about the latest project that you’ve worked on? Give some detail on why it was important for you or for the company and what you enjoyed about it?

I recently developed a marketing plan that focuses on promoting the Civil Rights Trail by highlighting the culture and communities around the historical sites. Working closely with the DMOs we've identified integration points across earned media, DTC marketing, and travel trade promotional activity to draw awareness and inspire international travellers to experience the culturally-rich communities themselves. I've always enjoyed puzzling with my family growing up and putting together marketing plans that have several amazing elements is a bit like a 5000-piece puzzle to me. Once all the puzzle pieces come to place, it's exciting to take a step back and see how everything connects.

If applicable, how have you seen the tourism industry change since you've been working in it and how do you feel it has improved for women?

I've been in the tourism industry for almost six years, and the last two years are where I've seen a significant change and pivot to intentionally be more inclusive and diverse. While still very much male-dominated, I've also seen more women rise to the leadership levels which is exciting to me because it signals that the industry sees the importance of women in leadership.

Now thinking about the future, what would you want to see change or improve in the industry? How (if at all) would this improve the role of women in the industry?

Continue to diversify the leadership and build in professional development opportunities for women to advance.

What things are in place at your workplace or in your every day that enable you to excel?

My female colleagues willingness to take the time out and let me seek out advice or insights on projects that I'm working on. That level of open communication is vital across teams, but especially women who understand and relate to the unique work challenges that you are facing.

The official IWD theme of 2022 is #BreakTheBias - If any, what biases within your role and/or industry would you want to be challenged?

A more inclusive and authentic portrayal of women and people of color in the storytelling we promote.

What's the best piece of career advice you've received?

Never be the smartest person in the room.

Would you have any recommendations for future female leaders in the industry?

I recommend encouraging and fostering growth for women in their networks. When a woman breaks a barrier she builds a path for a woman behind her to follow.
