The Digital that Delivers programme is a pioneering initiative by Fáilte Ireland aimed at transforming the digital capabilities of attractions and activity providers and Fáilte Ireland’s strategically funded festivals. Launched in 2021, this two-year development programme provides businesses with the necessary digital tools, skills and strategies to improve their online presence. The programme will recruit up to 720 businesses and will run until the end of 2026. It was created in response to research highlighting the lack of digital technology adoption by attractions and activity providers. By equipping these businesses with essential digital tools, skills, and strategies, the programme aims to enhance their online presence, optimise booking systems, improve customer engagement, and drive sales. People visit places for things to see and do, so by enabling attractions and activity providers to perform better online, we will support the delivery of Failte Irelands ambitions to drive more visitors outside of our tourism hotspots and towards our less mature regions our regional dispersal ambitions.
Failte Ireland's research identified major issues with the utilization of digital technologies in the Irish tourism sector. Many businesses were found to have websites that lacked online booking capabilities, and very few were utilizing online booking systems that would give them access to global distribution channels. Additionally, the majority of visitor experience websites were not rated highly. These issues were recognized as hindering Ireland's competitiveness in the global tourism industry and preventing the country from meeting the rising demand for online booking of attractions and activities.
To tackle these issues, Failte Ireland created the Digital that Delivers programme with the goal of digitally transforming a significant portion of Irish Visitor Attraction businesses. The programme offers a comprehensive approach to digital transformation, providing businesses with financial support, expert guidance, and training opportunities. Each business receives a customized digital transformation plan and benefits from significant financial aid in the form of investment grants. Moreover, businesses are provided with extensive support, including dedicated project consultant support, technical support from subject matter experts, and digital capability building training through an online learning platform.
Digital That Delivers continues to stand apart as one of tourism's most impactful industry digitalisation programmes. In short, there is no other programme like it and the comprehensive nature in which industry has been evaluated, on-boarded to the programme and supported through strategic, technical and performance upgrades deserves recognition.
The programme's highly evidence based approach and data-driven methodology ensures that every cent invested delivers significantly higher return on investment. This is evidenced not in broad estimates based on market size and readiness, but specifically in the targeted nature in which market failures have been addressed. Digitalisation has been used as an intervention, whilst performance upgrades have been monitored and demonstrated through the application of various technologies, in particular around bookability and distribution.
Core Optimisation have taken on a sizeable task, not without risk and uncertainty, yet their highly focused approach with robust indicators has shown that it is possible for destinations to offer intervention with demonstrable economic impact.
