Are We Investing Enough in Digital?

Digitalisation has been the core element of transformation in tourism. The emergence of the latest digital technologies has made it essential for destinations and tourism organisations to invest in an end-to-end digitalisation process to meet the demands of a tech-savvy generation of travellers.

The theme of Digitalisation and Competitiveness on 1st December 2022 at X. Festival 2022 highlights inspiring strategies that show how to develop a sustainable framework for digital competitiveness. This will help to support the tourism industry with the necessary tools, right partnerships, knowledge and skill sharing.

We will be exploring how destinations can benefit from data and knowledge-sharing hubs and from digital partnerships, and how they can build enhanced digital tourism experiences for travellers.

How is UX Shaping Destination Websites?

In a 2022 McKinsey report, customer satisfaction with digital experiences decreased by about four percent from 2021, despite high adoption rates. Poor user experience was at the top of the reasons. User interface and UX also lead the list of sources of dissatisfaction in 15 of the 19 European countries surveyed. We can conclude that this is a challenge for anyone working in the digital sector.

In tourism, UX is increasingly recognised as a key part of any destination website's development - providing a great experience for the digital user, allowing them to retain visitors on pages for longer and engage with them.

That's why we are bringing Andrej Perc, Creatim, to join this session. Andrej will explain why destinations need to invest and improve their UX, so that travellers get a satisfactory experience while looking for inspiration or information to plan.

Strengthening Digital Products & Experiences

With every year going by, people spend more time using the internet, according to Hootsuite and We Are Social. The main reason is to find information, which makes it critical for any business in tourism to leverage its online presence if it wants to be relevant and successful.

We will learn from Visit Finland's example, which is working towards ensuring that the products and experiences of the destination are all digitally strong and effectively distributed through online channels.

Annakaisa Ojala, Digital Development Manager, will take us through what this process has been like to date and what their next steps will be to complete this digital transformation process. The aim is to help businesses distribute their products and experiences by building competence and improving distribution channels.

Embarking on a Literary Tour with VisitPortugal

This year, Portugal is commemorating José Saramago's centenary and VisitPortugal has developed experiences around his life and especially the 'Journey to Portugal' book, published in early 1980s.

In this session, Filipa Maria Cardoso, VisitPortugal, will explain what's the strategy behind exploring literature to create product attractiveness.

Filipa will also present the "Journey to Portugal Revisited" campaign, which includes twelve tours of the country to reinterpret the immense territory José Saramago drew his inspiration from.

We're very excited about this session which will provide great insights into destinations working on creating thematic, different and unique experiences.

Becoming a Smart Destination

As cities become smarter every year, the European Commission awards two European cities an award for their outstanding achievements in the areas of accessibility, sustainability, digitalisation and cultural heritage and creativity.

We will be joined by the teams working on making these cities the smart capitals of Europe. We will learn from the inspiring stories of destination transformation with the evolution of digital tools, equal and accessible opportunities to residents as well as travellers and sustainable and economic growth.

We'll hear from the cities that held that title in 2022 - Fundació Visit València with Joan-Carles Cambrils, and Bordeaux Tourism Office with Julie Benisty, and from 2023 nominees - Visit Gijón with Daniel Martinez, and VisitAarhus with Trine Graae Lundorf.

Developing Experiences Through Technology

How are experiences with immersive technologies attracting visitors to explore the destination?

Immersive technologies are adding a new layer of reality to tourism experiences by offering augmented city walks, virtual heritage tours and visually interactive cultural experiences to engage travellers with the destinations. However, storytelling and quality of experience still play a significant role in developing cultural experiences with immersive technologies to catch travellers' attention.

To explore this topic further, we invited Olaf Schlieper, German National Tourism Board. This NTO offers immersive experiences to travellers, such as the AR Castle experience, which allows travellers to explore the magnificent German castles using Augmented Reality on their smartphones.

In this session, we will be covering how destinations can use immersive technologies to enhance the consumer journey and visitor experiences and how to build cultural stories around virtual experiences.
