How can destinations encourage and engage the local stakeholder and businesses to contribute toward sustainability strategies? One of the key challenges and essential tasks while leading the transformation towards sustainability is to drive the stakeholders and local businesses towards the vision of achieving sustainability goals.
To tackle the challenge of inclusivity and commitment of local stakeholders in driving sustainability transformation at a destination, DTTT facilitated a Design Thinking Lab in collaboration with eight different European partners, including Chambers of Commerce, City Councils and Academic Institutions.
The two-day 'Design Sprint' brought together seventy SMEs from Amsterdam, Barcelona, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dubrovnik, Kiel and Tallinn to collaboratively develop impactful and innovative solutions to sustainability challenges. The participants went through an extensive workshop, learning the five stages of Design Thinking focusing on the three main pillars: collaborative research, exploratory ideation, prototyping and market testing of their solutions. The iterative process allowed the participants to critically examine their ideas, understand the users, learn from sustainability practices in tourism and work together to develop innovative solutions.
How did the Design Thinking approach help local businesses to lead the sustainability transformation? By the end of the workshop, the businesses were able to redefine the sustainability challenges faced by the industry. They put their acquired Design Thinking skills into practice, where they worked in teams to design impactful and measurable solutions key to addressing sustainability. They built a plan of action, and found areas of partnerships for projects to drive the sustainability strategy.
An overall feedback of the Design Thinking Lab demonstrated the significant value created for businesses, whilst an extensive strategic report provided additional insights, gathered through desk research, highlighting the core needs of businesses, the innovations developed through the programme and in-depth exploration of the root causes of the challenges explored. With the Design-led approach adopted by DTTT in collaboration with the TOURBAN community, the local SMEs and businesses were able to define a common vision towards sustainability and set innovative and measurable actions to achieve their sustainability goals.
