Climate Justice in Tourism: An Introductory Guide

July 2024
Sustainability

This report calls for a greater consideration of climate justice by the travel and tourism industry. It explores the many reasons for looking at tourism through a climate justice lens and highlights the risks of not doing so.

It is relevant for anyone working on climate action across the industry. However, it is intended primarily for leaders and teams within mid-size and larger/multinational travel and tourism businesses who are tasked with developing and implementing climate, sustainability, CSR and ESG strategies. The aim is to catalyse a much needed conversation as to how climate justice can be understood and delivered in ways that are practical, beneficial, and inclusive for all.

The report provides:

  1. An introduction to the concept of climate justice in the context of travel and tourism.
  2. Diverse perspectives on tourism’s roles and responsibilities regarding climate justice, in particular from a range of tourism experts and stakeholders interviewed for this project.
  3. Examples of possible mechanisms to promote just climate action by the industry.
  4. Proposals for next steps to catalyse climate justice in tourism.

The report’s findings are the independent conclusions of a research collaboration between the Travel Foundation, the University of Waterloo, Tourism Cares, the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) and Cuidadores de Destinos, supported by Expedia Group. The research team has conducted in-depth interviews with a wide range of tourism experts and stakeholders (our methodology is outlined in section 6).

We acknowledge that this is in no way a comprehensive representation of all the different views on climate justice and tourism. Instead, the report aims to enable important and overdue conversations on climate justice across our industry. We also acknowledge that climate justice is a sensitive and challenging topic, and such conversations may be accompanied by feelings of anger, vulnerability and discomfort. We recognise that such reactions are valid and vital parts of ensuring honest and meaningful progress.
