Instructions For Practitioners: How Can My Tourism Destination Become Sustainably Mobile

Sustainability

Climate-friendly mobility is not only essential for protecting our own living environment, it is also increasingly demanded by the market. For more and more people, sustainability issues are also becoming decision criteria when choosing a vacation. But this also offers opportunities for the industry, because alternative mobility offers can certainly appeal to new groups of guests.

The varied natural environment and the temperate climate contribute significantly to the attractiveness of Austria as a tourist destination. The demand segments in tourism are as diverse as the regions. Mountains, lakes, rivers, cities, protected areas, spa and health, alpine sports, climatic health resorts, wine routes, congress tourism - Austria has all this (and more) to offer despite its relatively small area. In summer, nature and landscape are by far the most important reasons for choosing the destination, in winter the sports opportunities come before them.

In 2019 – before the outbreak of the corona pandemic – tourism had a direct or indirect share of 7.6 percent of Austria's gross domestic product. After a sharp decline due to the pandemic, the share finally reached a level of 6.2 percent again in 2022, with an increasing trend given the positive development in overnight stays.

However, this sector, which is important for Austria's economic performance, also brings with it burdens: According to the World Tourism Organization, the industry accounts for 5 percent of global CO2 emissions, which are largely responsible for climate change, 75 percent of which are caused by tourist traffic
