Survey on the Gendered Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Tourism Employment

May 2023
Policy Guidelines

Through conducting two-wave surveys, this study aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the employment conditions and entrepreneurship of women and men in tourism, and specifically to identify key contingent factors/barriers that determine the precarity of women’s employment in the tourism workforce during the most hit period (March 2020 to August 2021) and the late/post COVID-19 era (September 2021 to March 2022). More specifically, the survey aims to analyse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on employment and working conditions in the tourism sector for women and men and to understand how the ongoing changes in the labour market, social deconstruction and reconstruction caused by the pandemic magnify and exacerbate the gendered nature of precarious work in the sector. These issues are explored in this report through a focus on Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
