Year Release of Top Technologies - 2024

This deliverable, D1.3.Year 2024 release of top technologies, is provided by the TOURBIT project that aims to support tourism SMEs in the uptake of digitalisation and innovation by fostering their skills, knowledge and network. The deliverable is increasing digital awareness by introducing state-of-the-art technologies and trends in SME tourism. This document has been provided by doing literature studies of ongoing trends and used technologies as well as gathering information and experiences from TOURBIT partners and their stakeholders relating to a selected set of technologies. As a base has been the deliverable D1.1. Year 2022 release of top technologies that was the first version of top technologies utilized in the tourism sector. Also, the deliverable D1.2. Year 2023 release of top technologies has been utilized and further updated during the revision process. In this year 2024, the activities and updating have been focused on the selected set of technologies being Augmented Reality (AR)/Virtual Reality (VR), Internet of Things (IoT), and Blockchain.

The European tourism industry is adapting to the changing needs of travelers. A focus on experiential activities, responsible practices, and catering to budget- conscious tourists while prioritizing safety will be key for destinations to thrive in this evolving landscape. 2024 is marked by a shift in traveler priorities and a focus on responsible practices, such as:

  • Tourists are increasingly seeking immersive and enriching experiences over traditional sightseeing. This includes activities like hiking, cycling, wellness retreats, and culinary tours
  • Eco-conscious travel is gaining traction. Travelers are opting for destinations with a focus on responsible tourism, environmental protection, and local community well-being.
  • The focus on responsible travel extends to transportation. Tourists are increasingly opting for eco-friendly options like trains and bicycles, leading to a potential rise in these modes of travel. Destinations with well-developed sustainable transportation infrastructure will be at an advantage.
  • Safety remains a top priority for international travelers, especially in the initial months of 2024. Affordability is another key factor, with the rising cost of living influencing destination choices.
