This template is aimed at phrasing clear and well-defined challenges for businesses to ideate on... and it is fun!
The sailboat is a metaphor used in design thinking to help define what is positive and what is not so positive in the way things are done.
So looking at the business in general or a specific department or project, you can use this template to examine what is working and what implementations are needed.
Use the boat area as a place to gather thoughts on what is moving you forward, what you like and think makes your brand unique (top part) and what is holding you back and keeping you from doing all the things you would like to do (bottom part). You can dedicate 2 to 5 minutes per part.
After identifying your sails and anchor elements, vote and decide which are the most relevant. Collect the most voted sails and discuss them. Then focus on the anchors and use them to phrase challenges using the expression "HOW MIGHT WE ... ?" in the blue box titled "LET'S PHRASE CHALLENGES".
Once you have a few challenges in the blue box, focus on the users, who are all the people who are involved and affected by that challenge. You will then have a collection of users. Next, you'll have to focus on their needs. You can already start thinking about how to respond to those needs and find solutions.
There is an example for each area you can look at for guidance.
If you print the template, we suggest you choose a large format, like 2x A3 or A2 and stick it on the wall. This will really facilitate collaboration and co-creation among team members.
