Materials:

  1. This template
  2. Markers or pens
  3. Sticky notes (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Define the challenge: Clearly state the problem or opportunity you want to address.
  2. Set the timer: Allocate specific time for each round of ideation (e.g., 10 minutes each).

Steps:

Round 1: Brainstorming

  1. Write the challenge: At the top of the "Brainstorming" section, clearly state the challenge you're tackling.
  2. Generate ideas: Encourage participants to freely share any ideas that come to mind, no matter how obvious or simple they seem. Write down every suggestion on sticky notes or directly on the template.
  3. Encourage quantity: Aim for a high volume of ideas in this round. Don't judge or critique suggestions at this stage.
  4. Build on each other's ideas: Use prompts like "And then what?" or "How can we improve on that?" to spark further elaboration and connections.

Round 2: Absurdity Exploration

  1. Shift gears: In the "Absurdity Exploration" section, encourage participants to break free from conventional thinking.
  2. Embrace the weird: Now is the time for outlandish, outrageous, and seemingly impossible ideas. The more imaginative and absurd, the better!
  3. Challenge assumptions: Question every aspect of the problem and explore ideas that defy common sense or limitations.
  4. Think humorously: Use humour and playfulness to spark unexpected connections and perspectives.

Synthesise and build:

  1. Review both sections: After the designated time for each round, take a step back and review all the generated ideas.
  2. Identify patterns: Look for common themes, connections, or recurring elements across both brainstorming and absurdity sections.
  3. Build upon the absurd: Can seemingly impossible ideas inspire more realistic and innovative solutions? How can you incorporate elements of absurdity into practical solutions?
  4. Refine and prioritise: Evaluate the potential of each idea, considering feasibility, impact, and alignment with the original challenge. Shortlist the most promising ideas for further exploration and development.
