How Can We Achieve an All-Inclusive, Green and Sustainable Tourism Industry?

The pandemic has made us realise the importance of sustainability as one of the most critical challenges of our time - considering both the planet and people.

Day two of X. Festival 2022 on 30th November 2022 focuses on the theme of Sustainability Leadership. The pandemic has made us realise the importance of sustainability as one of the most critical challenges of our time - considering both the planet and people.

There are various inspiring initiatives taken by destinations, tourism organisations and businesses in developing innovative and collaborative initiatives to address the challenge of climate change. However, there is still a long road to achieving an all-inclusive, green and sustainable tourism industry.

During X. Festival 2022, we will be highlighting inspiring stories that are leading sustainable tourism transformation, identifying setbacks and successes in a destination’s journey towards sustainability, and areas of policy leadership to attain a common vision for a sustainable future of the tourism industry.

The Role of Certifications Driving Sustainability in Destinations

Various tourism organisations like Green Destinations, EarthCheck and Vireo are supporting tourism organisations to achieve their sustainability goal with sustainability certification and award programmes. Such sustainability certification programmes, built on international standards, help destinations to identify the key areas of improvement, benchmark progress and earn recognition for inspiring sustainable actions, whilst taking a collaborative approach towards sustainable development.

At this session, Natasha Montesalvo (EarthCheck), Luigi Mazzaglia (Vireo) and Albert Salman (Green Destinations) will be identifying the challenges faced by tourism organisations while adopting certification programmes and how can destinations be better prepared to achieve our sustainability goals and drive a sustainable transformation.

How are Leading Organisations Driving Sustainable Transformation?

The DTTT will also organise a panel to discuss how are leading organisations driving sustainable tourism transformation. The journey towards transformation requires strong leadership on both policy, governance and business and product development - working towards a common vision for a better future where tourism's impact is only positive.

This insightful panel will serve as a source of inspiration, calling for action to achieve sustainability objectives. We'll be hearing from Ingmar Rentzhog, 'We Don’t Have Time', a movement and a tech startup that leverages the power of social media to hold leaders and companies accountable for climate change, and Tarek Habib, MURMURATION, a company which empowers individuals, organisations and businesses to transform communities and the environments around them.

Tackling Plastic Pollution in Tourism

Another topic on everybody's minds is plastic pollution, one of the severe challenges faced by the tourism industry which is causing serious damage to beauty and natural resources at the destination. The Global Tourism Plastic Initiative is inspiring local stakeholders to join the fight against plastic pollution - where we'll be exploring how destinations, tourism stakeholders and travellers are coming together to change behaviours towards reducing waste and promoting a more circular economy.

What does it Take to Have Collaborative Initiatives in Tourism?

The road to sustainable tourism transformation requires collaborative work and partnerships. At the DTTT we acknowledge the importance of working collaboratively to achieve better results and to empower everyone.

During the session, we’ll explore with Melvin Mak, TUI Group, how the tourism stakeholders can work collaboratively towards a common vision towards sustainability. Melvin will also share everything about the Destination Co-Lab Rhodes strategy, a future lab for sustainable tourism.

Join us for the X. Festival 2022 to see how the leaders of transformation are working towards a sustainable future for our industry.
