Matea is passionate about tourism's sustainable transition and climate change adaptation. In her role as Project Manager at the National Tourism Organisation of Montenegro, she is contributing to the establishment of the country as a sustainable tourism destination through the promotion of nature-based activities and rural tourism experiences; a core aspect of Montenegrin heritage following the 1991 declaration as the world's first ecological state.
Matea is actively championing the development of hiking and biking routes in Montenegro. Despite some challenges in the maintenance of less popular trails, the project has spurred the growth of nature-based tourism in Montenegro. Many tourism agencies have developed expertise in offering outdoor activities, enhancing Montenegro's image as an adventure destination and the establishment of diverse nature-based experiences such as canyoning, rafting, kitesurfing and birdwatching.
The growth of rural tourism, with over 150 registered rural households integrated into travel agency offers, demonstrating the project's positive impact on rural communities. This diversification of tourism offerings away from the coast indicates a move towards more sustainable tourism models that benefit a wider range of communities.
